From time immemorial, we’ve sought to express connection with the natural world in ways both pragmatic and transcendent. Women have always been a part of that creation and expression, but often women have been relegated to subjects within those landscapes, rather than the minds from which the art is drawn.

“Vantage Points: Women Artists and the Landscape” brings together six DC-based women artists, all of whom are current and past members of the artist collective at DC Arts Studios. Each of these women approach their creative expressions of the natural world differently, but each is fully in command of her perspective, centered not as a subject but as creator within the natural world. In addition to the artworks on display, these artists are opening up their process to gallery visitors with installations of reference material and inspiration behind the landscape pieces on view.
Chloe Yelena Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08374611288934496122noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8001293968431975144.post-67062925945426159932024-02-29T06:00:00.004-05:002024-02-29T10:11:27.282-05:00Online class through Politics and Prose Bookstore: Motherhood Is Out of This World

I will be teaching two online, synchronous classes this spring through Politics and Prose Bookstore:

Women in Midlife: Reading The Familiar by Sarah Kain Gutowski

Motherhood Is Out of This World

I shared a bit more about the class exploring Sarah Kain Gutowski's new poetry collection - and visiting the class! - recently here. The exhibition will run from January 22, 2024, to March 1, 2024, with an opening reception to be held on Thursday, February 15, from 12 - 1 pm.

Employing a broad range of media, each artist presents works that address the gallery’s 2023-2024 season theme, “Blue,” and its connection to the natural world. Crocetta’s highly detailed paintings and sculpture highlight the prevalence of plastic marine debris and the need for ocean conservation. Leich has produced two hybrid animation and experimental video collages that highlight climate change throughout Iceland and Alaska. Lozner has created two sculptures that focus on the rising sea levels, as well as a series of vintage photos combined with paint chips intending to provoke questioning from the viewer of the various meanings of labeling and identity. Poet Kain Gutowski and the artist Starr have collaborated to create a series of cyanotypes and poems. When juxtaposed, these poems and images document how it is possible to endure the volatile and unpredictable world, particularly when it’s in crisis.

I will also be reading in the Inner Loop's series on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Shaw's Tavern alongside featured reader Nadeem Zaman and eight other local authors. These changes can be described as "turns." The two hour class will include some time for writing and discussing your own projects, too. This feels like the best intersection of so many people who I love.

I took my first ever Italian language class with Victoria Poletto in 1994 as a first year at Smith College. In high school, I had taken Spanish every semester so I thought I should register for a language. I choose Italian primarily because I thought I'd reached my (low) peak with Spanish and wanted to start over. I also wanted to understand how to pronounce mozzarella since everyone in my family and life pronounced it differently. As a naive first year student, I didn't understand that a class that met every day was "intensive" and six credits (rather than the usual four) worth of work.

I did not do well. This wasn't Victoria's fault; it was entirely my fault. I just couldn't understand the language. When I went to her office armed with paperwork to drop out of the class, Victoria said with great authority that I would be going to Florence one day with the JYA program. I asked for her forgiveness and reminded her of my name. She laughed and then proceeded to offer me extra help, let me take tests over and over and helped me to eventually learn the language. In the end, I spent over 5 years studying and working in Florence, Italy. The language changed my career path, sense of home and relationship with family in southern Italy. Which is all to say, I owe Victoria and the Italian department so much.

As I've shared here, I am both the co-founder of Brown Bag Lit, with Shasta Grant, and on the board of the Italian American Writers Association. Together, we are co-hosting a discussion between two Smith College Italian professors and translators as they discuss My Language is a Jealous Lover (Rutgers University Press) by Adrián N. Bravi, This most beautiful book is about the author and other writers living between languages, which is how I feel at times, too.

I hope you can join us. I know that it will be an amazing discussion. If you speak more than one language, have considered translating yourself, write original prose or poetry or read work in translation, I know you will learn something, too. If you can't make it over your (East Coast) lunch, you can watch it later on our Youtube channel.

Please register for your free Zoom link here.

Here are the details:

On Translating My Language is a Jealous Lover (Rutgers University Press) by Adrián N. Bravi with Giovanna Bellesia Contuzzi and Victoria Offredi Poletto

Monday, January 8, 2024

12:00 PM 1:00 PM EST ONLINE

Giovanna Bellesia Contuzzi and Victoria Offredi Poletto will discuss translating My Language is a Jealous Lover by Adrián N. Bravi into English. They will read from the text and share their process of translating and working together on the project.

My Language Is a Jealous Lover explores the plights and successes of authors who lived and wrote in languages other than their mother tongue, from Samuel Beckett and Vladimir Nabokov to Ágota Kristóf and Joseph Brodsky. Author Adrián N. Bravi weaves their stories in with his own experiences as an Argentinian-Italian, thinking and writing in the language of his new life while recalling that of his childhood. Bravi bears witness to the frustrations, the soul-searching, the pain, and the joys of embracing another language.

Giovanna Bellesia Contuzzi (Professor Emerita) and Victoria Offredi Poletto (Senior Lecturer Emerita) have taught and collaborated in the Department of Italian Studies at Smith College since 1990. They are committed to bringing the voices of migrant and second-generation writers to the English-speaking world. Together they have translated many short stories from Italian into English as well as five books: Geneviève Makaping’s Reversing the Gaze: What if the Other Were You? and Adrián N. Bravi’s My Language is a Jealous Lover (both Rutgers University Press, 2023); Gabriella Ghermandi’s Regina di fiori e di perle and Cristina Ali Farah’s Little Mother (both with Indiana University Press, 2015 and 2007); and Dacia Maraini’s Stowaway on Board (Bordighera Press, 2000). They are currently working on an anthology collecting and translating materials written in the last thirty years by first and second generation migrant writers. They are also collaborating on the translation of new materials that will accompany Sri Lankan-Italian director Surganga Katugampala’s new film.

Co-sponsored by IAWA: Italian American Writers Association and Brown Bag Lit.

This event is free but registration is required for the Zoom link. Get your free ticket here.

IAWA on social media:

Twitter

Instagram

Facebook

Brown Bag Lit on social media:

Twitter

Instagram

Facebook

BlueSky

Chloe Yelena Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08374611288934496122noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8001293968431975144.post-2654724728811366152023-12-01T15:02:00.003-05:002023-12-01T15:02:25.166-05:0015th & Final Brown Bag Lit Reading of 2023!

Shasta Grant and I started Brown Bag Lit in January 2023. This calendar year, I averaged about four books a month. I've read books by Brown Bag Lit authors, those I assigned for classes at American University and Politics and Prose, and, with some crossover, of course, books I've been wanting to read. If you're curious about what I've read, I try to keep track on my Goodreads account; please follow me there. I'd love to follow you, too!

Literary journals (in print and online) aren't included in this count. And neither are the hundreds of student essays I've read and graded, as well as writing coach or adult creative writing student submissions.

It feels good to read or listen to audiobooks. I have a pile by the side of the bed, a wishlist and books on hold from the library. I particularly love listening to books on Libby available easily and for free from the DC Library system. Reading offers us knowledge, escape and advice for our own writing, too.

To help support authors whose work you enjoy, rate their work (hopefully positively) on Goodreads, leave a review where you purchased the book or take it one step further and write a more formal book review. Regardless of all of this time and study, I never figured out the prepositions. And all of that confusion about prepositions in a second language led to more confusion in my first language, English. The good news is that, like most hard or confusing things, a poem came out of it!

I am proud to have this new poem from a longer series (across a published book and chapbook and two manuscripts) of Italian and English Vocabulary poems published today in Porcupine Literary. This poem showcases my ineptitude at directions and prepositions, but also considers the role of language as communication (or perhaps that love language we all seek.)

I hope you'll read the full poem here and look around the site. It is a journal for and by teachers. If you have work to submit, note that they are looking for fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry that speaks to teachers and/or teaching. I do think anyone would enjoy reading the online publication. Enjoy!

Chloe Yelena Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08374611288934496122noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8001293968431975144.post-80295031068257811882023-11-09T19:50:00.003-05:002023-11-09T19:50:29.585-05:00Join us!
